A Chasen reimagined /
A modern interpretation of an ancient tool, our premium resin Chasen, crafted in Fukui, Japan, reimagines the bamboo whisk for daily use: resilient, hygienic, and quietly elegant.

Among the treasured implements of Chanoyu, the bamboo chasen stands as both tool and emblem its hand-carved tines coaxing water and tea into a cloud of luminous jade. Yet such grace is delicate; it demands careful tending, gentle storage, and is most at home in the cadence of special occasions, not the repetition of daily use.

From this reverence came a quiet question: could a whisk be made less fragile, yet true to its purpose? The answer was found in polypropylene, a hygienic, durable resin familiar in everyday tools like toothbrushes.

The first prototypes were too rigid, unable to summon the froth essential to tea. But after a year of refinement and consulting with tea ceremony instructors, the design found its rhythm. With 73 tines, 55 outer and 18 inner, modelled after the Shin Kazuho chasen, it offers a supple yet controlled motion that whisks usucha into a light, even froth. Soft to the touch, heat-resistant to 100 °C, and dishwasher-safe, it’s crafted for daily use. Approachable for beginners, trusted by experienced hands, it offers ease without compromise.

Crafted for daily use, it balances the elegance of tradition with long-lasting durability. Easy to disassemble and clean, it remains pristine over time, free from the fragility of bamboo. In black, the utensil assumes a discreet poise, an object of understated refinement, balancing utility with ceremony.

With use, the tips may warp and gently curl, echoing their motion. A simple ritual restores them: place on the kuse-naoshi stand, pour over hot water, and let them return to its original form.

While it may not match the whisper-fine foam of a traditional chasen, its quiet resilience makes it a thoughtful choice for those who value practicality shaped by Japanese craftsmanship.
