A traditional Matcha whisking tool for preparing both Usucha and Koicha
Indulge in the epitome of Japanese craftsmanship with our 64-prong Shin Tsuneho Chasen (matcha whisk), expertly handcrafted by the esteemed 20th-generation artist Hirata Kazuhisa in Takayama, Nara prefecture, Japan. Steeped in a rich legacy that spans over 500 years since the Muromachi Period, the Hirata family has meticulously passed down the tradition of bamboo whisk-making, and our Chasen is a true testament to their unparalleled skill and artistry.
To create our Chasen, Hirata-san begins by selecting the finest single piece of premium white Hachiku bamboo, carefully harvested from the renowned Kansai region and then meticulously dried and seasoned for three years to ensure optimum quality and durability. The prongs of the whisk are meticulously shaped by hand using the highly acclaimed "fingertip art" technique, a revered skill now practised by only a few selected master artisans in the Takayama village, the northwest region of Nara prefecture. This technique results in prongs that are not only functional but also visually stunning, showcasing the mastery of the artisan's craft.
Designed with the utmost attention to detail, the length of the handle of the Chasen is intentionally crafted for a comfortable grip and effortless whisking, whether preparing Usucha (thin tea) or Koicha (thick tea). The 64 prong of the whisk creates a mesmerizing pattern that enhances the aesthetics and elevates the sensory experience of your Matcha preparation ritual.
Is hard to believe that with all the effort put into crafting this whisking device, in the past, a Chasen was a disposable tool that was discarded after one use.
This Chasen is not just a kitchen tool; it's a work of art that has been showcased in prestigious exhibitions worldwide, reflecting the exquisite beauty of Japanese culture and tradition.
